Sam Says You are Born to Shine by Sam Hirschmann
Shine bright and don’t ever dim your light. These are the words Sam’s mom tells her every night.
When Sam begins at a new school, her classmates make fun of her colorful clothes and vivacious dance moves. Not letting her inner light dim, Sam shows them that the joy you exude when you’re unapologetically yourself is contagious!
In Sam Says: You Are Born to Shine, readers learn the power of expressing their true selves.
Q. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?
A. I hope my readers take away a sense of excitement and joy
in being themselves after reading this book. I want every reader to truly
believe that by them being themselves they shine a unique light out into the
world that is a gift to everyone around them…and may end up in a big dance
celebration! I also hope that this book can be helpful to a reader who is ever
feeling afraid or nervous in being themselves because of what their peers may
think. The hope was that they could grab this book for a boost of confidence,
courage, and excitement to embrace their uniqueness and shine it out into the
world.
Q. What is the future for the characters? Will there be a
sequel?
A. Yes, I definitely have a plan to have more Sam Says books
where the character, Sam, continues to teach readers new lessons in life!
Q. What’s your favorite spot to visit in your own country?
And what makes it so special to you?
A. The West Village in New York City. The West Village is
where I lived when I really started to re-discover myself. Everywhere and every
street in the West Village will always remind me of a time where I fell back in
love with myself and with life. It’s one of the most magical and inspiring
places for me. I love going back and visiting my old neighborhood and can feel
the tangible growth that was made there.
Q. Can you share with us something about the book that isn’t
in the blurb?
A. The green headband Sam wears in the book comes from a green headband I actually wore when I was little. I chose to put it on Sam because I wore that headband at a time when I was so freely expressing myself. I was around the age of 5-6 and it was before I had a clue about being afraid of being self-conscious of what I wore or who I was. In all the pictures of myself when I was little, I just wore that headband with such confidence, and it was truly an expression of my light.
Q. What are you reading now?
A. The Seven Sisters,
by Lucienda Riley. An amazing book series that I would recommend to anyone,
Lucienda is a fabulous storyteller!
