The Narrows by Mark Zvonkovic

Welcome to my thoughts on the second book by Mark Zvonkovic in his Raymond Hatcher Stories series.

This story, told in the 1970’s, is the second book in the series but the first book the author wrote. It was originally published under a different name but after writing A Lion in the Grass, book one in the series, the author came back to it and turned it into the book he wanted.
Junior high school teacher Larry Brown knows his cousin is in a cult and wants to rescue him. Larry has a lot going on in his life, which covers most of the first half of the book. Larry plans to take his cousin, and another member of the cult, to his family vacation home called The Narrows (hence the book title).
This psychological thriller takes place over 10 days and is not what you normally expect from a psychological thriller these days. For me, the first half of the book was a little slow on the action but it was great for character development. I love the author’s note at the beginning where he explains the history of this book and a little about the final book in the series, Belinda. The author’s sense of humor comes out when he writes that Belinda is the name of the book unless marketing/editors make him change it.
This is a solid second book in the series and I look forward to reading the third and final book.
