Interview with the Author:

Q. How long did it take you to write and illustrate My Way Home?

A. I wrote the original story in about a day, followed by weeks of editing.  The illustrations I squeezed into every free moment over nine months.

Q. Do any of your hobbies or favorite activities appear in the book?

A. Our family loves spending time outside, so nature features heavily.  And like Kit, I’m an avid walker!

Q. What do you like best about writing children’s literature?

It is thrilling to create a world and share it with others.  I love the idea of kids being inspired by and creating their own adventures within that space.

Q. What were you like as a child?

A. Much like I am now: constantly creating!  It’s liberating, but did sometimes prove a problem in school.  It took me way longer than it should have to find a balance between responsibilities and desires.

Q. Would little Holly have liked your book?

A. I say I wrote it for my kids—especially my younger son—but I absolutely wrote it for little Holly.  I would’ve adored it.

Q. Do your children enjoy My Way Home?

A. My older son is a teenager, so while he is encouraging, it’s not really to his taste.  But you should have seen how nervous I was handing the first proof to my almost three-year-old.  My relief and pleasure grew as we read it together for the first time.  He didn’t squirm, look around, or start talking about cars and trucks.  He was completely invested!  I cannot tell you how fulfilling it is every time I find him flipping through the pages on his own, lingering over his favorite parts and commenting to me about Kit being sad, or tired, or happy, or—his very favorite—Kit being carried by his mommy.  It is my great hope that other children enjoy My Way Home as much as he does.
